Ah, Phuket...

It's good to know that when I'm lost, I can ALWAYS find my way around with a clearly illustrated map as photographed below...  The language is Thai.

Loads of road work is being done in Chiang Rai, but this particular machine has some nice color and lines...

One of the reasons I think Thailand is tacky is that everything is COVERED with geegaws and glitter and swoops and swirls - in gold!  This is the top of the Wat Jed Yod, and there are numbers inside each of these white squares that must have to do with the I Ching.  If not they are the cost of getting laundry done.

Yup, swoops and swirls, gold and glitter...

This truck, jammed halfway inside a house, was more my style - ramshackle, as my neighbor calls my house...

The clock in the center of town, too, has its garish gold protuberances, as do the lights lining the middle of the street.

I cannot resist a good door, this one with no door handle and just a padlock.  We leave Chiang Rai this afternoon to fly to Bangkok and then on to Phuket, a beach resort, for God knows what reason, but I gather there is a large Peranakan community there which can give us more information about the Chinese diaspora.  Oh, yes, this IS an academic trip!  Sometimes I forget, and I think you can see why!
